Hunting Lodge Road Bikeway/Walkway

September, 2009

The bikeway/walkway along Hunting Lodge Road between North Eagleville Road and Carriage House Drive has been paved and the driveways along the path reconstructed as necessary.  Landscaping and seeding will continue into the fall.  The path is now being used and will help separate vehicles from pedestrians along this popular stretch of road.

Some problems with litter along the new pathway have been reported -- while the Town's enforcement people are working on this, everyone is asked to please be mindful of the cleanliness of this area and do not discard cups, plates and other items along the path.

The Town of Mansfield Department of Public Works, throughout this fall, has been constructing the 8-foot wide paved bikeway/walkway along the southwest side of Hunting Lodge Road.  The new trail will begins at the intersection of North Eagleville Road and Hunting Lodge Road and proceed north to Carriage House Drive where it will connects to the terminus of the existing paved trail on the northeast side of Hunting Lodge Road, which extends to Birch Road.  The length of this section of multi-purpose trail, when completed, is approximately 2,940 feet.  This project is similar to the new trail on Separatist Road, which was completed in 2007.

Tree Cutting was completed in September to accommodate the trail corridor.  Town’s Department of Public Works crew then removed the stumps and brush and began excavation for the trail base.  To date the gravel base for the entire length of the trail has been completed.

Crews will work on the trail through the winter provided the weather is mild.  In spring 2009 the base will be fine graded and paved.  Plantings and landscape items will also be installed in the spring.

Because the construction of the trail is close to the road, travelers are again reminded that delays will result due to alternating one-lane traffic patterns. There may also be periods when the road will be closed to through traffic as is necessary.  The public is advised to use alternate routes of travel.

The Town remains committed to developing safe alternative forms of transportation for the community.  The construction of this important segment of the Town’s priority walkways is another step toward meeting this goal.

Construction will be done with Town forces and it is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2009.

Questions regarding this project should be directed to the Department of Public Works at (860) 429-3331 or 439-3340.

The Town of Mansfield Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the start of construction for the proposed 8-foot wide paved bikeway/walkway along the southwest side of Hunting Lodge Road. The new trail will begin at the intersection of North Eagleville Road and Hunting Lodge Road and proceed north to Carriage House Drive where it will connect to the terminus of the existing paved trail on the northeast side of Hunting Lodge Road, which extends to Birch Road. The length of this section of multi-purpose trail is approximately 2,940 feet.

Tree Cutting will begin the week of September 8th. There are 32 large trees that Tennant Tree Co. will remove to accommodate the trail corridor. Once the trees are cut the Town's Department of Public Works crew will remove the stumps and brush so that excavation for the trail base may begin.

The construction of this important segment of the Town's priority walkways is another step toward meeting this goal.

Construction will be done with Town forces and it is anticipated to take approximately a year to complete.

Questions regarding this project should be directed to the Department of Public Works at (860) 429-3331 or 439-3340.

March 2008

The Town of Mansfield Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the completion of the semi-final design for a proposed 8-foot wide paved bikeway/walkway along the southwest side of Hunting Lodge Road.

The Town hired the survey firm of F. A. Hesketh & Associates to produce the base mapping for this corridor. Using this base mapping and input from adjacent residents the Town Engineering Department designed the proposed trail. Based on the design, easement maps and appraisals have been developed. The Town is prepared to begin negotiations with the effected property owners to secure the necessary easements.

The Town remains committed to developing safe alternative forms of transportation for the community. The construction of this important segment of the Town’s priority walkways is another step toward meeting this goal.

It is anticipated that construction will be done with Town forces and begin in the spring of 2008.

Plans are available in the Engineering Department of the Mansfield Town Hall for review. Questions regarding this project should be directed to the Department of Public Works at (860) 429-3331 or 439-3340.

December 12, 2006

The Town of Mansfield Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the completion of the conceptual design for a proposed 8 foot wide paved bikeway/walkway along the southwest side of Hunting Lodge Road. The new trail will begin at the intersection of North Eagleville Road and Hunting Lodge Road and proceed north to Carriage House Drive where it will connect to the terminus of the existing paved trail on the northeast side of Hunting Lodge Road, which extends to Birch Road.  The length of this section of multi-purpose trail is approximately 2,940 feet long.

The project was conceived by the Town’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) a number of years ago, and as been designed at the urging of The University of Connecticut.  At the March 2004 TAC meeting four members of the UConn Undergraduate Student Government addressed the Committee regarding the need for this facility.  The students presented a petition signed by hundreds of students in favor of this bikeway/walkway, and showed a video of a weekend night along this stretch of road.  The video depicted the unsafe conditions that can exist between pedestrians and vehicular traffic.  Following the students’ presentation the Committee re-prioritized the Town’s walkway projects.  The Hunting Lodge Road Bikeway was given a high priority, based on the need for pedestrian safety.

During the summer of 2006 the Town hired the survey firm of F. A. Hesketh & Associates to produce the base mapping for the corridor.  After the survey was complete, the Town then engineered the conceptual design.  The design was presented to the Town Council on December 11th to schedule the Public Hearing for January 22, 2007.  The design will now be provided to the appropriate Town offices, adjacent property owners and the general public for comment.  This section of multi-purpose trail will cost approximately $475,000 to construct (the Town may provide the labor and equipment valued at $300,000).  The Town has already budgeted some funds for this project within its capital budget.

It is anticipated that construction will begin in 2007 and continue into 2008.

Plans are available in the Engineer Department of the Mansfield Town Hall for review or click here for the online (pdf) version.  Questions regarding this project should be directed to the Department of Public Works at (860) 429-3331.
