IV.               COMMUNICATIONS:

A.     Agenda

B.    May 3, 2007 Minutes
C.    Senior Living, April Issue

V.                 DISCUSSION:

A.      Update on Request for Qualifications: K. Grunwald reported that he is continuing to send the RFQ out to interested developers, including all developers who belong to the Massachusetts chapter of ALFA.  Please direct any inquiries to him.

B.      Report from Susanna Thomas on “The Colonnades”: S. Thomas recently visited The Colonnades in Charlottesville, VA, which offers a continuum of care.  It was noted that the development of this facility was strongly supported by the alumni association of the University of Virginia, which donated the land for the project.  It is managed by Sunrise Corporation, and offers a full continuum of residential services, including a nursing home and a new “reminisces” (memory) unit.  There is a wide range of living options for the residents, and a medical clinic located on the grounds.  The recommendation was made that our group should look at the potential for a “memory unit”, and the professional expertise required for staffing this unit.

C.      Report from Kevin Grunwald on Campus Continuum: K. Grunwald reported that he spoke with Gerard Badler from Campus Continuum.  This group develops and manages 55+ Active Adult communities with an academic host.  They do not offer assisted living services, and their focus is on supporting a lifestyle of continuous learning and mentorship in an academic setting.  His comments on our proposed plan are that we may need a minimum of 200 units to be financially viable.  He also felt that if the university does not have a financial stake in the project it is important to encourage support from the President or CFO, and to explore partnership opportunities.

D.      Contact with UConn organizations: Matt Hart has contacted Tom Callahan at UConn, and was told that it would be acceptable for this group to contact any UConn-affiliated organizations including the alumni relations office, AAUP and the Uconn Foundation. J. Brubacher will contact Ed Marth from AAUP. John Martin is the head of the Uconn Foundation; it is not clear who an appropriate contact would be with the Alumni Association, but K. Grunwald will explore this.

E.      Civil Engineering Project: Concept Site Plans were made available to identify potential uses of the parcel of land adjacent to the Community Center.  We will invite Lon Hultgren from the Dept. of Public Works to our next meeting to explain these plans.

F.       “Other”: none.

VI.               SCHEDULE FOR FUTURE MEETINGS: first and third Thursday of each month, 9-10:30; location TBD.

VII.             ADJOURNMENT: meeting adjourned at 10:20 PM
