TOWN OF MANSFIELD
Arts Advisory Committee Meeting
December 2, 2008
7:00pm
MINUTES
1. The meeting was called to order at 7:08p by Acting Chair Jay Ames. Members present: Jay Ames, Kim Bova, Scott Lehmann, Joan Prugh. Members absent: Anita Bacon, Leon Bailey, Blanche Serban. Others present: Taylor Anderson, Nancy Conlon, Tom Bruhn, Jay O’Keefe (staff).
2. The November meeting, unwisely scheduled for Election Day, was cancelled. The draft minutes of the 07 October 08 meeting were approved with the correction of “Taylor” instead of “Terry” in the table under item 6.
3. MCC art displays.
a. Taylor Anderson, a middle school student, brought digital prints of some of the photographs he would like to exhibit in the hallways and lower sitting room display area in the winter quarter. The Committee tentatively OKed his application but will need to see and approve all the work before it goes up. Mr. Anderson’s 8x10 prints will have to be matted and framed in order to be hung from the rails; it was suggested that photos with a similar theme be grouped together for display (e.g., close-ups in the lower sitting room).
b. Nancy Conlon, who belongs to a group dedicated to keeping alive some of the decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, showed the Committee samples of her work, which she would like to exhibit in the display cases in the winter quarter. The paintings and penwork incorporated in some of these items are her own. The Committee OKed her exhibit, subject to seeing and approving (photos of) any additional items included in the exhibit.
c. Joan Cole has applied to show large lithographs in the upper sitting room display area, but she did not submit any photos. Kim will call and ask for them. If they are OK, she could have this space for the winter quarter.

4. Financial assistance. After some discussion, the Committee appeared to agree that it would not be appropriate to apply some of its modest budget to helping individual artists with the expense (e.g., matting, framing) of putting on a show at the MCC.
5. Coffee house readings. Joan reported that a memoir-writing group may be interested in a reading at the MCC in the spring.
6. Insurance. Jay O’K has begun inquiries about what sort of insurance against damage or loss the Town might be able to provide for art displayed at the MCC.
7. FY07-08 report. No corrections or additions were made to the Committee’s annual report, written by Scott and e-mailed to Committee members in September.
8. 2009 meeting schedule. The Committee agreed to meet at 7:00p on the first Tuesday of each month, save for September, when it will meet on the 8th rather than the 1st.
9. Future agenda items. Jay A. suggested revisiting the issue of what the Committee should be doing, aside from arranging art displays at the MCC.
10. Adjourned at 8:25p. Next meeting: Tuesday, 06 January 09, 7:00p.
Scott Lehmann, Acting Secretary, 04 December 08; approved 06 January 09
