ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Meeting of Monday, 06 August 2007

Mansfield Community Center (MCC) Conference Room

MINUTES

1. The meeting was called to order by Acting Chair Kim Bova at 7:06p.  Members present: Leon Bailey, Kim Bova, Scott Lehmann, Joan Prugh, Blanche Serban.  Members absent: Jay Ames.  Others present: Jay O’Keefe (staff), Laurie Smolin.

2. The minutes of the 02 July 07 meeting were approved as written.

3. MCC art displays.

  1. Laurie Smolin brought photos of the watercolors from which she will make a selection for display (15 Oct – 15 Jan); she would like to use the lower sitting room area as well as the hallways.  Her works raise no policy issues, and the exhibit was unanimously approved.
  2. Still needed for the fall period are works for the entry-way cases (and, if possible, the upper sitting room spaces).  Kim spoke with Shauna Shane (at what was formerly Riverworks) and reported that she expressed interest in displaying sculpture, but she has not yet submitted an application. Jay O’K. sent a press release out today, advertising display opportunities at the MCC.
  3. The Mansfield League of Women Voters has asked for space in the entry-way cases to advertise Know Your Town Fair (8 September), beginning 26 August.  Jay O’K. will ask Bobby Brown to OK removal of her works for the extra week and will offer to store them at the MCC until they can be re-installed.
  4. The MCC will be closed for annual maintenance during the week of 19 August, and paintings by Bobby Brown and Anita Bacon may have to be removed temporarily for wall-painting.  If so, Jay O’K. will invite them to supervise removal and re-hanging of their works.

4. Art display policy.  Jay O’K. sent the draft art display policy for comment to MCC staff, the Recreation Advisory Committee, Town Mgr. Matt Hart, Town Atty. Dennis O’Brien, Greg Haddad, the Mansfield Library, and the Senior Center.  To date, only Patricia Hope at the Senior Center had replied with a written comment, noting that the Center has its own art screening committee and gives priority to “artwork designed or created by members of our Senior Center or seniors in the surrounding community.”  Further action on the art policy was deferred until the September meeting, in hopes that we will have received additional comments by then.

5. Downtown Partnership.  Kim reported that Festival on the Green organizers have received numerous applications to exhibit in the juried art show; its judges will be Benton Museum Director Steven Kern, Shirley Sheathhelm, and Judith Thorpe.  Scott & Blanche have agreed to judge the children’s sidewalk chalking contest again this year.  Blanche wondered if a better surface could be found; Scott will pass this suggestion along to

Kathleeen Paterson.  Blanche also suggested that it would be nice if the Town were eventually to install some sculpture along the new sidewalk from the MCC to Storrs Center.

6. Other arts offerings at MCC.  Joan & Kim have not yet spoken with those they offered to contact about another poetry reading and battle of the bands, but they will do so.

7. Adjourned at 7:43p.  Next meeting: Tuesday, 11 September, 7:00p.
