ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Meeting of Monday, 08 January 2007

Mansfield Community Center (MCC) Arts & Crafts Room

MINUTES

1. The meeting was called to order by Acting Chair Jay Ames at 7:09p.  Members present: Jay Ames, Kim Bova, Scott Lehmann, Blanche Serban.  Others present: Jay O’Keefe (staff), Beverly Rigler.

2. Minutes of the 04 Dec 06 meeting were approved as written.

3. MCC art displays.

  1. William Stallman has withdrawn his application to exhibit metal sculpture in the glass cases in the next display period.  Blanche will approach Barbara Katz, who at one time was interested in exhibiting ceramics.  Ms. Rigler asked whether jewelry could be exhibited in the cases.  Yes, if it seems to the Committee to fall on the arts side of the vague arts/crafts divide; samples or photos should be submitted with an application.

b.      Beverly Rigler will install small framed art quilts in the hallways on 16 Jan; Scott will ask Nancy Bergeron to remove her watercolors from the hallway and lower sitting room areas beforehand.  Jay A. will suggest to George Jacobi that he hang his collage photographs in the lower sitting room area on the 16th.

c.      Jay O’K reported that the glazing in the sitting room is “pyrolic-coated float glass”, but he could tell us nothing about its UV transparency.  The Committee doubted that UV would be a problem for quilts displayed there for only three months.  Ms. Rigler will approach the quilters in her group and, should they consent, will hang three larger quilts in the upper display areas (tentatively, at 1:00p, 16 Jan).  Should they decline, Blanche will replace her paintings with others.

d.      Jay A. would like to display abstract painting and collage in the hallways and upper sitting room area in the 15 Apr – 15 Jul period.  He suggests that George Jacobi could display more collage photography in the lower sitting room area during this period.  If so, we will need only find an exhibitor for the glass cases.

e.      Kim Bova will ask Frank Krasicki to submit a CD or prints of photos of the works he would like to exhibit.  The files he e-mailed were too large for Committee members to handle.

4. Nutcracker collaboration.  Jay O’K called the Committee’s attention to the annual production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet, a collaboration between Parks & Recreation and Miss Kelly’s Dance and Drama.  This has been an annual event since 1998, involving about 150 children (!) in 2006.  Rehearsals begin in September for performances in December at the E. O. Smith auditorium.  The production is financed by sponsorships and sales of T-shirts, videos, etc.

5. Storrs Downtown.  Cynthia van Zelm has tentatively agreed to attend our February meeting with a representative of the developer to discuss an arts presence in the new Storrs Downtown development.  Committee members should review our correspondence with the Downtown Partnership before this meeting.

6. Membership.  Ms. Rigler may be interested in joining the Committee; she will decide after attending more meetings.  She will try to interest a friend who is involved with dance in attending a meeting.

7. The Annual Report is (past) due; Scott will write something up.

8. 2007 meeting dates.  First Monday of each month, except for July and September, when we will meet on the second Monday: 08 Jan, 05 Feb, 05 Mar, 02 Apr, 07 May, 04 Jun, 09 Jul, 06 Aug, 10 Sep, 01 Oct, 05 Nov, 03 Dec.

9. Double-sided case.  Installing a rod across the top of this case for hanging art may be problematic, since anchor points are not conveniently placed.  It may be easier to support a rod (or rods) from wooden frames at each end of the case.

10. Adjourned at 8:32p.  Next meeting: 7:00p, Monday, 05 Feb 07.
