ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Meeting of Monday, 04 December 2006

Mansfield Community Center (MCC) Conference Room

MINUTES

1. The meeting was called to order by Acting Chair Jay Ames at 7:06p.  Members present: Jay Ames, Scott Lehmann, Blanche Serban.  Members absent: Kim Bova.  Others present: Sandy Baxter & Maria Tickson (Mansfield Advocates for Children), Beverly Rigler, Jay O’Keefe (staff).

2. Minutes of the 06 Nov 06 meeting were approved as written.

3. MCC art displays.

  1. Sandy Baxter indicated that Mansfield Advocates for Children (MAC) would like to use the display cases during the first two weeks of April for an exhibit of children’s art in conjunction with the “Week of the Young Child”, 22-28 Apr 07.  Works would be solicited from local day-care providers and would probably be rotated within the two-week period to allow more works to be shown.  The Committee agreed to reserve the cases from 01 to 15 Apr (possibly longer, if it doesn’t line up another artist for the 15 Apr – 15 Jul period) for this purpose.  It requested that flat art be matted and suggested that specifying standard sizes for such works (e.g., 8˛´10˛) in advance would permit matting at minimal cost.  If MAC would also like to use the hallway or lower sitting room display areas, it should let the Committee know at its 08 Jan 07 meeting; works hung in these areas would need to be framed.
  2. Jay A. will contact William Stallman to see if he is willing to display his metal bird sculpture in the display cases for the slightly shortened 15 Jan – 01 Apr period.  If he really wants an extra week, Jay will approach Patty Vinsonhaler about removing her works a week early (ca. 07 Jan 07).

c.      Beverly Rigler would like to display small framed art quilts in the hallways; she brought photos to the meeting.  She may be able to find someone interested in displaying larger quilts in the upper sitting room (it has two 8˘w ´ 5.5˘h spaces and three 7˘w ´ 5.5˘h spaces).  George Jacobi submitted an application to display collage photography; Jay A. called him from the meeting and reported that the lower sitting room area is fine with him.  These exhibits will run from 15 Jan to 15 April unless MAC wants the space beginning 01 Apr (see item a. above).

d.      Kim Bova e-mailed Committee members photos from Frank Krasicki (who is interested in exhibiting watercolors, acrylics, and digital photos of nature sculpture), but only Scott had looked at the large files; he thought the sample watercolor appropriate, but wondered about displaying photos of sculpture rather than the sculpture itself.  Since suitable display areas for 15 Jan – 15 Apr are now spoken for, the Committee will consider his application for the 15 Apr – 15 Jul period at its 08 Jan 07 meeting.

4. Web postings.  Now thatthe current display period is coming to an end, a list of exhibitors has been posted on the Parks and Recreation website.

5. Downtown Partnership.  Jay A. and Cynthia Van Zelm have been playing telephone tag about meeting to discuss an arts presence in the new Storrs Downtown development.  Jay will suggest our 05 Feb 07 meeting.

6. Membership.  Beverly Rigler expressed interest in joining the Committee and was encouraged to apply formally (to Mayor Greg Haddad).  She said that she would approach some dance people she knows to see if they might be interested.

7. Future Agenda items.

a.      Ms. Rigler wondered if the sitting room glass blocks uv.  If not, fabric art displayed for three months in the upper area could be damaged.

b.      How might the double-sided case be adapted to display flat art?

c.      Ms. Rigler enjoyed instrumental music recently performed at the MCC by students from E. O. Smith High School; she suggested that the Committee arrange performances of this kind here.

7. Adjourned at 8:25p.  Next meeting: 7:00p, Monday, 08 Jan 07.
