ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Meeting of Monday, 06 November 2006

Mansfield Community Center (MCC) Conference Room

MINUTES

1. The meeting was called to order by Acting Chair Jay Ames at 7:07p.  Members present: Jay Ames, Kim Bova, Scott Lehmann, Blanche Serban.  Others present: Jay O’Keefe (staff).

2. Minutes of the 02 Oct 06 meeting were approved as written.

3. MCC art displays.

  1. Jay O’K reported that MCC staff has received positive comments on the new art displays.
  2. William Stallman is interested in displaying metal bird sculpture in the display cases for the 15 Jan – 15 Apr period.  Joan Buck would like to have the cases in late March to display children’s art in conjunction with the “Week of the Young Child”, 22-28 April.  It may be possible to change displays in the cases a week early in January (8 Jan) to give Mr. Stallman a full quarter (ending 8 Apr) or perhaps a full quarter less one week (ending 1 Apr).  Should this work out, the Committee will impress upon Ms. Buck the importance of attractive presentation; flat art, for example, should be matted and perhaps framed.

c.      Applications to exhibit have been received from Frank Krasicki (acrylics, watercolors, & prints) and Beverly Rigler (art quilts); neither has submitted photos.  Kim and Blanche (resp.) will contact Mr. Krasicki and Ms. Rigler (resp.) to ask for photos.  George Jacobi (collage photography) may be interested, but has not submitted an application; Jay A. will call him to find out.

4. Web postings.  The IT Dept. is currently short-staffed, but a list of current displays has been submitted for posting on the Parks and Recreation website.  Blanche wondered if it could provide links to artists’ websites; Jay O’K saw no problem as long as they are limited to currently exhibiting artists.

5. Downtown Partnership.  Jay O’K provided copies of Cynthia Van Zelm’s 26 Jun 06 reply to our 11 Apr 06 letter concerning an arts presence in the new Storrs Downtown development.  She would like to discuss this with the Committee at one of our meetings; Jay A. will contact her and suggest the December meeting (4 Dec).  Jay O’K thought that a consistent (& persistent) arts presence at Partnership meetings might be needed to realize arts goals for the development; the Committee should ask Ms. Van Zelm what actions she thinks would be most useful.

6. Membership.  Derri Owen has officially resigned.  Current members were urged to identify prospective new members, preferably from currently unrepresented arts (theatre, dance).  Jay O’K will put out another press release advertising openings on the Committee.

7. Adjourned at 7:52p.  Next meeting: 7:00p, Monday, 4 Dec 06.
