Spelling Homework Practice

Third grade spelling words come in two different categories. The first category is the words that come as part of the weekly spelling unit. Those words may be practiced on the Spelling City web site or our spelling program's web site Spelling Connections. Either site may be used based upon your child's interest level. The second category of words is muscle words. Muscle words are not tested every week. They are assessed in November, January, and May. It is important for your child to practice the muscle words with his or her normal spelling words.

Word lists can be printed from Spelling City or the Muscle Word links, if your child has lost his or her pre-test. If you have questions, please contact your child's third grade teacher.

In addition to the Cast-A-Spell muscle words, third graders are encouraged to work on the following list of 1,200 words. The words below are listed in the order of frequency of use in everyday writing. Since the is the most frequently used word in our language, it is number one in the list below. The first 25 words are used in 33% of everyday writing; the first 100 words appear in 50% of adult and student writing; the first 1,000 words are used in 89% of everyday writing. Although these words will not be formally tested in third grade, it is a good idea for students to work on these words if they have mastered the Cast-A-Spell muscle word list. The first lists start off easy, but then get harder.
