Robotics

On November sixteenth, Jimmy Hodrinsky came in to talk to the fifth grade about a robotic competition. There is one for kids ages nine through fourteen and one for kids in high school. Kids all around the U. S. compete in these competitions.

The one for kids ages nine through fourteen is with Lego's. Each team is allowed to use a certain amount of Lego's, motors, and other things. Their team has to build a car and drive it on a course in a certain amount of time. These teams are from all different schools and were given a certain amount of time to work on the vehicle.

The one for high schoolers allows anything to be used in the process of making the vehicle. It has to be a certain width and length and it is only allowed to be five feet tall. It can only weigh 130 pounds. Jimmy Hodrinsky, Mrs. Tamsin's father, showed a video of the competition, called U. S. First. U. S. First is a competition that is takes place in Rutger's.

The teams participating have two minutes on a field to gather black and yellow balls. The black balls are worth five points each, and the yellow, one point each. They have to capture all the balls and put them in a goal. Teams are allowed to steal balls from the other teams. If, at the end of the two minutes, a robot is hanging on the striped bar, that team receives five points. The team that has the most points at the end of the two minutes wins.

Jimmy Hodrinsky is the coach for Buzz, the team that has the robot named Buzz as well. Their team logo is the smiley face. Buzz, #175, won first place this year.

These competitions are original and fun, and available for people ages nine through fourteen.
