How Much is Too Much? Are Teachers Giving Students Too Much Homework?
by Angelica (not even the assistant boss)
Are students receiving too much homework? That is possibly the most debated issue between students and teachers. Teachers claim that students do not receive more than an hour and a half of homework each night. However, students in turn object that between extracurricular activities, they hardly have time to finish all the homework teachers give.
I have noticed that there is a considerable amount more homework 8th graders receive than 7th graders. I myself have noticed the sudden leap. I often stay up until nine doing homework. The homework has becoming more challenging too, I find myself calling friends for help on work almost daily. Last year, the homework was much easier and most people understood it. Whenever I needed some help (which was not often) I knew I could receive the help I want from friends within the first two phone calls. In 8th grade, however, I can scarcely hope that any of my friends will understand the homework.
Are 7th, 6th, and 5th graders feeling the pressure too? The 6th graders said no, they thought they received a reasonable amount of homework each night, and they strongly agreed that double-blocks definitely helped decrease the amount of homework.
The 5th graders all agreed there was an adequate amount of homework. They thought it was easy and didn't take up too much time.
The 7th graders thought there was definitely too much homework. They thought that they received too many projects at once. I can relate to the 7th graders' lament, seeing as I went through the ordeal of how I had to rush in order to finish all my projects at the same time last year. Otherwise, the homework is fair.
Don't mistake me, this is not a complaint to the teachers, it is simply a column on what I feel about the amount of homework given.
