FLIGHT TRIVIA

Houdini was the first man to fly an airplane solo in Australia.

The top of the tower of the Empire State Building was originally intended though never used as a mooring place for dirigibles.

The name of the first airplane flown at Kittyhawk by the Wright Brothers was Bird of Prey. The maiden flight of the Bird of Prey, however, was only long enough to sail 59 feet.

An airplane uses more fuel flying at 25,000 feet than at 30,000 feet. The higher it flies, the thinner the atmosphere and the less atmospheric resistance it must buck

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. Six-year-olds laugh an average of 300 times a day. Adults only laugh 15 to 100 times a day.

Put more laughter in your life. Depending on frequency, laughter may add 1.7 to 8 years to your life. By laughing more, you reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, and make your immune system younger

Flossing and brushing daily earn you 6.4 years more on your life. Gum disease and periodontal disease can age the immune and arterial systems.

Get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. That will add 3 years to your life. According to studies, mortality risk is reduced in women who regularly sleep this amount of time. Sleep also boosts the immune system and attention span.

Get some sun exposure. This adds 1.7 years to your life. Vitamin D is activated in your system. Which in turn will slow aging of the cardiovascular and immune systems, and improve your mood. However, too much sun promotes aging - and can cause skin cancer.

                                            ENERGY

All energy facts taken from http://www.funtrivia.com/

v     The amount of energy produced by the sun in a 2 week period equals the combined stored energy of all the coal, iron and natural gas reserves known to man.   [Source: the people's almanac #2]

v     How cold is it in outer space? If you could measure the temperature in a deserted region of space, with nothing for light years around, it would be about 2.7 degrees Kelvin (-454 degrees Fahrenheit). Zero degrees Kelvin is 'absolute zero,' the point at which molecules have no kinetic energy and therefore stand dead still. The 2.7 degrees figure arises from the microwave background radiation - energy left over from the Big Bang that floods the universe in all directions.   [Source: Emazing - Michael Natkin]

v     Horses expend more energy lying down than they do when they are standing up!   [Source: Bathroom Readers Guide]

v     One out of every 100 little specks on a fuzzy TV screen is caused by nuclear energy from the big bang!   [Source: Friend]

v     The Sun has enough energy to burn yet another 5 billion years.   [Source: Exploring Space]

v     Olympus Mons, a volcano found on Mars, is the largest volcano found in the galaxy. It is 370 miles across and rises up 15 miles. Volcanoes on Lo, a moon of Jupiter, produce a poisonous gas called sulphur, instead of lava. One fifth of Earth's flowing lava occurs in Iceland. About 40 percent of Iceland's energy is geothermal. Iceland also has geothermic phenomena called a geyser. The only other geysers in the world are found at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Rotorua, New Zealand.

v     The United States has 5% of the world's population, yet consumes 25% of it's energy supply.

v     Natural gas, which is the major constituent, is a clean fuel. For the same energy, it produces 40% or more and less carbon dioxide when it burns. It is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect than coal and 25% less than oil. Moreover, natural gas contains almost no sulfur. Unlike coal and oil, it produces little sulfur oxide when it burns, the main contributor to acid rain. Also, there are no combustion residues, such as dust and ash, and no radioactive waste to dispose of. Natural gas is immediate and local compared to oil and nuclear energy.

v     A person uses more household energy shaving with a hand razor at a sink (because of the water power, the water pump and so on) than he would by using an electric razor.

v     In some volcanic areas such as Iceland, the temperature rises beneath the surface of the earth as high as 680 degrees F (360 degrees C) that engineers can tap the geothermal energy by piping hot water from underground to warm nearby homes, offices and factories. An outdoor swimming pool in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik is heated so effectively by this method that it remains open and in use all year round.

v     If their heat energy could be converted to electric power, two SRMs firing for two minutes would produce 2.2 million kilowatt hours of power, enough to supply the entire power demand of 87,000 homes for a full day. [NASA]

v     The energy released by the three Space Shuttle main engines is equivalent to the output of 23 Hoover Dams. [NASA

v      Like Jupiter and Saturn, Neptune has an internal heat source -- it radiates about twice as much energy as it receives from the Sun [The Nine Planets]

v     Jupiter radiates more energy into space than it receives from the Sun. [The Nine Planets]

v     The energy in an average one-day hurricane could power the United States for three years.

v     353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as spacecraft re-entering the atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy per second. Each. In short, they will burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and creating a deafening sonic boom in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandth of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

*Genetics

Humans share genes with bananas.

Chimps share 98% of their genes with humans.

Two-thirds of all humans die for reasons connected with the genes they carry.

If stretched out, the DNA from a single human cell would measure approximately six feet in length.

If the DNA contained within the cells of a human being was stretched out, it would reach to the Moon and back eight thousand times.

The genetic code of a human consists of around 3,000,000,000 letters.
