Requirements:

RED BOOK Ms. Bancroft:  Read chapter 3 in the textbook

BLUE BOOK Ms. Poller:  Read chapter 4 in the textbook

Assignment # 1 -  Due in class on Tues, Oct. 1 (classes 1,2 & 3) or Wed, Oct. 2 (classes 4 & 5)

        I.      Answer these questions using complete sentences.  Be specific and include supporting details.

1.      What was a Sumerian city like?  What did Sargon I accomplish?

2.      Why were the twin rivers important to the Sumerians?

3.      What role did religion play in Sumerian life?

4.      In what ways do you think your school is similar to or different from schools in Sumer?

5.      What personal qualities does the story of Gilgamesh teach?  Do you think these qualities are important?  Why or why not?  Explain.

6.      Why did Hammurabi believe it was important to have a single code of law for the Babylonian Empire?  Do you agree?  Why or why not?  Explain.

      II.      Answer Map Practice questions 1-3 on page 62.

    III.      Define all bold print and italicized vocabulary in the chapter

Assignment #2 – Due in class on Thursday, Oct 10

Do one of the following:

  1. Visit three of the hot link sites on the Bancroft/Poller web page within the school home page (see www.mmsnet.org) Explore the site and then fill out the site evaluation sheet for each of the three you have chosen.  The sheet is available on line or from your teacher.
  2. Write a one page essay on the contributions made to modern civilization by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Include an introduction, conclusion and lots of supporting detail.  Note all resources used.
  3. Using any research source (be sure to record the sources you used), write a one page biographical sketch of any of the important people mentioned in the chapter. Include dates of birth and death, significant contributions and other details that you will find.
  4. Create either a diorama or a poster reflecting at least four aspects of life in ancient Mesopotamia.  Write a paragraph for each of the aspects illustrated that explains the significance of that item in the daily life of the Sumerians.
