Using
the information you have gathered in classes and through your readings, please
answer the following questions. Use
complete sentences and give a lot of supporting detail. Reread your answers to be sure they are
clear and complete.
1.
How did
geography affect the development of early Greek civilization? Compare this development with the
development of early Sumerian and Egyptian cultures.
2.
Why did
the Greeks enter a “Dark Age?” What was the impact of the “Dark Age” on Greek
civilization?
3.
What
are the characteristics of a polis? What did the citizens of a polis consider
most important?
4.
Contrast
the way of life in Athens and Sparta.
Include the roles of men and women, government,
etc.
5.
Describe
the roots of democracy in ancient Greece.
6.
Do you
think Pericles deserved the title of “first citizen” of Athens? Why or why not? How did his actions affect the success
of the Delian League?
7.
What
caused the decline of the Greek city states?

#2
Choose
a project from the list below. If
you have another idea, please talk with your teacher for
approval.
A. Construct
a timeline of events from Greek history. It must be in scale, show at least 10
events and include a short written explanation of each event.
B. Do a
video, a play, a short skit or a powerpoint presentation on some aspect
of ancient Greek life, or on some event in Greek history. This is a group
project and should take at least 3 minutes to present. Teacher approval
required.
C. Write a
play – a comedy or a tragedy – that follows the style of ancient Greek plays
(chorus, etc.). Plays should be no
longer than 3 pages and/or 5 minutes to present (Presentation is not required).
Teacher approval required.
D. Make a
travel brochure that is designed to attract people to visit or move to ancient
Greece. Include lots of
details.
E. Write a
one-page biography of an important person or god from ancient Greece. You must use at least 2 sources; list
your source(s).
F.
Choose
a Greek god. Write a journal entry
(at least one page) as if you were that god. Reveals the god’s responsibilities
through your entry.
G. Create
a poster or model of a Greek building.
Explain the building’s purpose and important architectural
features.
