Year Overview

Social Studies

Ms. Bancroft - Room 306

Ms.Poller - Room 305

Getting Started:

All students have been issued a textbook, either a red or blue cover copy of Human Heritage, our seventh grade social studies text. Each book is essentially the same, just different editions. Blue textbooks will be used by Ms. Poller's classes, red books by Ms. Bancroft. Because of the different editions, assignment sheets will designate information by color of the text. Due dates will remain the same. Teachers coordinate assignments and activities throughout the year. Students will be given an overview of the year and will receive the first assignment/ unit plan for the Prehistory Unit. Please see that textbooks are covered and well cared for since they cost almost $50.00. Current events quizzes / presentations will be on Fridays, and will be administered each week unless otherwise noted.

Units: Prehistory, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Indus and Yellow River Civilizations, Ancient Greece, 2002 Year in Review, Ancient Africa and the Americas, Ancient Rome, Early Middle Ages, Middle Ages, Renaissance.

Interdisciplinary units will take place throughout the year.

Highlights:

·       Archaeological Dig at Bicentennial Pond - Thursday 9/12 and Friday, 9/13

·       Field Trip to Higgins Armory and other sites- To Be Announced (in the Spring)

·       Medieval Fair Wednesday June 4, 3:30-5:30 p.m. (all family members are welcome)

Grade Expectations: Will vary each marking period depending on units. Grade reflects a weighted average for assignments, tests, quizzes, current events, class participation, and class work.

Students will take modified mid-year and final exams. Unexcused late work will result in a reduced grade.

Assignment sheets will be provided for each unit. Assignments, due dates, quiz and test dates and unit expectations will be clearly stated. Information is available in print, on-line, and on homework hotlines.

Current events quizzes or presentations will take place on Fridays. Current events stories will be reviewed in class during the week. We encourage students to take an active interest in the world.
