If
you don't know history, you don't know anything. You're a leaf that
doesn't know it’s part of a tree.

Grade
7 Social Studies
Mrs.
McMunn- Room 306
Welcome
to seventh grade Social Studies!
This year, we will
learn about ancient history. Our units
will focus on the following cultures:
Highlights
of this year include an archeological dig, a trip to the Higgins Armory in
the spring, and the Medieval Faire in June.
You should have a pen/ pencil, social studies notebook or trapper section
with note paper, social studies folder, and current events notebook (will be
provided) EACH day in class.
For
most units, you will receive an assignment sheet with homework due dates,
quiz and test dates, and unit expectations.
Assignment sheets will be provided online
(www.mmsnet.org) and in print for each
unit. They are also recorded on our
homework hotline. It is critical that you keep track of
important dates in your plan book.
Unexcused late work will result in a loss of five points per day. If you do not have an
assignment on its due date, you’ll be expected to stay at the Homework Club
after school to complete the assignment (this should help you avoid losing too
many points). It is your responsibility to see me regarding missed work due to an
absence.
Current
events stories will be discussed each day in class. Current Events quizzes and/or presentations
take place regularly.
We
will have midterm and final exams. Both
exams will be on everything that has been studied since the beginning of the
year, so SAVE EVERYTHING! Folders are available if you would like a
separate folder for each unit.
Grades will average homework, tests, quizzes, current events, classwork, and class participation.
Hard work and a positive attitude will lead to
success! I hope you are looking forward
to this year as much as I am… We have quite an adventure ahead of us!

ESSENTIAL
QUESTIONS
As we explore various ancient cultures this
year, we will consider some essential questions about each culture’s values,
structure, and lifestyle. These allow us
to make comparisons among cultures and between ancient and modern times.
· What
influence did geography have on the development of a society?
· What
kinds of challenges did a society face and how did it react to them?
· How
does the social structure, including family and gender roles, reflect
the attitudes of a society?
· How
does the education system reflect the priorities and social structure of
a society?
· How
does the government, including the legal code, affect or reflect the
priorities and attitudes of a society?
· What
role does religion/ritual play in a society?
· How
have ancient cultures contributed to our modern world?
