Early Middle Ages
The
period between c. 500 AD and 1000 AD is commonly referred to as the “Early
Middle Ages.” Many different cultures
were active during this period. You will
be creating a “museum exhibit” that teaches other students about one of these
cultures.
You
may work as an individual or in a group (up to 3 members).
Assignment:
1. Please choose a
culture to study during this time period (500-1000 AD). Note that
many cultures were active before and after this time period, but this project
only focuses on the Early Middle Ages.
The
following cultures are introduced in the social studies textbook (further
research will still be required):
§
Goths: Ostrogoths, Visigoths (Chap. 17) (C)
§
Vandals (Chap. 17) (C)
§
Franks (Chap. 18)
§
Angles, Saxons and Jutes (Chap. 19)
§
Celts (Chap. 19)
§
Vikings (Chap.20)
§
§
The Spread of Islam (Arab Empire, Moors) (Chap. 22)
§
The
(C) = Challenging topic. It may be
difficult to find additional information on this culture.
2. Create a “museum exhibit”
on the culture you choose to research.
Your exhibit must include the following:
1.
A
written paragraph on each of the following features* of your culture:
a.) location (you may label a map in lieu of writing a
paragraph)
b.) government
c.) religion
d.) daily life
e.) contributions/ achievements
*Some cultures will have
more information on one category than another.
That’s okay!
2.
At
least
two visuals (examples: drawings,
dioramas of villages, clothing, models of culture’s homes or buildings,
fictional diaries, maps, and/or pretend “artifacts”).
3.
A
list of your sources. You need at least
3 sources. Cite sources according to the
“Citing Works at MMS” sheet.

* You will be outlining
the relevant chapter from your textbook.
If you are researching a culture not covered in
your textbook, you must find an article on your culture and outline it for this
assignment. Please show your teacher the
article ahead of time for approval.
Our EARLY MIDDLE AGES
“MUSEUM” will be held on March 25 & 26.
Your project will be on exhibit for other students to view. You will tour the “museum” to learn about
other cultures (than the one you studied) of that era.
Do your best to make your
exhibit interesting and informative!
