EGYPT UNIT 2008

You will receive a Guided Reading worksheet to fill out as you read Chapter 4.  This Guided Reading sheet will be handed out in two parts.

Project choices:  You may work with a partner in your SS class if you choose.  You will have time to conduct research and work on your project in class from 10/17-10/23.  A list of grading requirements will be distributed.

I. Make a model of an Egyptian pyramid with a minimum 4" base (no Legos).  Your model should accurately reflect a typical pyramid.  Put your name on the bottom and include an essay addressing the research questions with the model.                    

Research questions:  (Response should amount to 1 handwritten page): 

a.)  How were pyramids built?  Describe the steps in constructing a pyramid.                               

b.) Why were pyramids built?  Describe their functional AND religious purposes.

II. Describe the steps of mummification.  Your project may be a hand-illustrated book or poster, play or song (to be performed), or a product in Movie Maker, Photo Story, or Voice Threads.  (Answers to research questions should amount to 2-3 handwritten pages).

 b.) What materials did Egyptians use to mummify a body?                                                            

c). What religious purpose did mummification serve?

III.  Write biography describing the life and achievements of a pharaoh.  Your biography may be a hand-illustrated book or poster, play or song (to be performed), or a product in Movie Maker, Photo Story, or Voice Threads.  (Answers to research questions should amount to 2-3 handwritten pages).

IV.  Create a mobile with visuals of at least four contributions or inventions produced by the Egyptians.   Research questions (hang on index card or write on back of each “invention” visual; about 2 total pages of information):       

a.)  How did the Egyptians use these inventions?  Describe each accomplishment or invention. 

b.)  How do we use these inventions today?                                                                               

c.)  How have these accomplishments helped us or made our lives easier?
