ACTIVITIES FOR PRACTICING ALL OF THE ABOVE SKILLS:

BOWLING SKILLS EXPLAINED AND DEMONSTRATED: The teacher chooses several students to help demonstrate the basic skills. The teacher and student demonstrators explain and demonstrate each basic skill in progression (grip, stance, aim, approach, release, and follow through). The whole skill of bowling is then explained and demonstrated.

BOWLING PRACTICE: All students are given the opportunity to bowl for practice. Teachers and more skilled students coach and encourage the lesser skilled students during their practice time.

SAFETY SKILLS EXPLAINED AND DEMONSTRATED: The teacher and his/her student demonstrators explain and demonstrate the following skills that need to be followed to keep the activity safe for everyone.

  1. All bowlers must roll the ball at a safe speed.
  2. All pinsetters must stand on the mats.
  3. All pins must be replaced in a safe manner (no throwing or juggling pins).
  4. All balls must be returned, by rolling in a safe manner and at a safe speed.

RULES EXPLAINED AND DEMONSTRATED: The rules for Middle School Bowling are similar to regular bowling rules. The teacher and the student demonstrators explain and demonstrate the following rules:

  1. Each person bowls 2 balls.
  2. If Bowler A makes a spare (all pins knocked down with 2 balls), A gets to bowl 1 more ball.
  3. If Bowler A makes a strike (all pins knocked down with 1 ball), A gets to bowl 2 more balls.
  4. No bowler can bowl more than 3 balls per frame (turn).
  5. Bowlers count 1 point for each pin they knock down. Each bowler puts a total score for a turn in the box (frame). The maximum score for one frame (turn) is 30 (3 strikes in a row).
  6. All spares, strikes, individual and team scores (when 10 frames are finished) can be announced to the class.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOWLING LANES: This activity combines all of the above mentioned bowling skills, safety skills and rules. The objectives are to create an interest in bowling through participation in an enjoyable, successful, recreational activity and to improve fundamental bowling skills (listed above).

  1. The students are divided into groups of 4-6 students. Each group is assigned a bowling lane.
  2. All safety skills are explained and demonstrated (see above).
  3. All rules are explained and demonstrated (see above).
  4. All students are told that they are responsible for safely and fairly running their lane. This includes setting and maintaining a bowling order, keeping score and setting pins for each other.
  5. Students are encouraged to report strikes, spares, and individual and team totals (when they finish 10 frames). All names and scores will be announced.
  6. Top scores are announced to the whole school during morning and afternoon announcements. Teachers and staff are also encouraged to come and bowl as celebrity bowlers.

The Middle School Bowling Lanes provide a great opportunity for the development of teamwork, sportsmanship and positive socialization in a positive, relaxed atmosphere. Our staff works as a team; To explain, demonstrate, instruct and supervise. Once the activity begins, teachers walk around to each lane, instructing and encouraging students to give their best. Students who have previous bowling experience are encouraged to help and encourage other students. Many students enjoy having their names and scores announced. Other teachers and staff add to the excitement by coming in as "celebrity bowlers". This is a great activity for promoting school spirit.
