Ecology Unit

Information and Expectations:

In this Ecology unit, students will develop an understanding of ecosystems and how different populations of organisms interact within the ecosystem. Through an inquiry-based project of their own design, students will conduct research on an aspect of our local ecosystem and write a persuasive piece in Language Arts based on their research.

The goal of our study is to help students to develop an appreciation and respect for our natural world and to understand that a variety of factors, including human activities, have an impact on the ecosystem we all live in.

State Frameworks Relevant to This Unit:

Matter and Energy in Ecosystems – How do matter and energy flow through ecosystems?

6.2 - An ecosystem is composed of all the populations that are living in a certain space and the physical factors with which they interact.

¨Populations in ecosystems are affected by biotic factors, such as other populations, and abiotic factors, such as soil and water supply.

¨Populations in ecosystems can be categorized as producers, consumers and decomposers of organic matter.

C 1.       Describe how abiotic factors, such as temperature, water and sunlight, affect the ability of plants to create their own food through photosynthesis.

C 2.       Explain how populations are affected by predator-prey relationships.

C 3.       Describe common food webs in different Connecticut ecosystems.

***Challenge Opportunity! (optional)

If you are interested in completing a challenge project, please see your teacher. One possible project could be to find out about a local endangered or threatened species and identify what has occurred in the ecosystem that has created a threat to the survival of the species.  This is merely a suggestion and other project ideas can be discussed with your teacher.
