Units
of Study – Reading in 106
The Quick Spell Program reinforces commonly misspelled words. I
track misspelled words for students and introduce one new word per day. Ask
your child to share our daily word with you.
Our Anthology will be used intermittently during the year to reinforce
specific reading and comprehension skills.
Book Talks and UCONN COOP Book Review invites students to share their favorite books/galley
proofs with the class. It is my hope that these review sessions
open doors to new books/authors and build on a student's desire to read. Some
book discussions will take place on line at eBuilder.com.
The Read Aloud Program - Each day I begin class with a read aloud in reading and
science. It allows me to focus on particular elements we are studying in
reading, such as character analysis and setting, while introducing students to
what's new and exciting in literature. Our read aloud in science for September
is Night of the Twisters. Our reading class read aloud is The Ballad
of Lucy Whipple.
The WordMasters
Program –Vocabulary and analogies for elementary and middle school students: WordMasters is a national
competitions for students in grades 3-8 which encourages growth in vocabulary
and verbal reasoning. Over 4, 400 school
teams from 50 states participated last year.
Unlike other language arts contests which emphasize punctuation and
grammar, this competition helps students learn to think both analytically and
metaphorically. It addresses
higher-level word comprehension and logical abilities.
