Sixth Grade Social Studies & Reading

Welcome to my web page. My name is Sherry Andrews. This is my eighteenth year of teaching. I teach four sections of social studies and one section of reading.  I taught seventh grade literature and language arts on the seventh grade team at the Mansfield Middle School in the past.

6th Grade Social Studies – Cultures and Geography of the World

Sixth grade students will embark on an exciting trip “Around the World in 180 Days.”

I am co-advisor with  Doug Perkins (Math and Science Enrichment) for the German Exchange Program. Each year students from MMS are involved in a three-week exchange with Gymnasium Sarstedt, Germany.

I can be reached at school at 429-9341, X-204.   My homework hotline number is 6204.  You can leave me a message in my voice mailbox and I will return your call at my earliest opportunity.  I can also be reached by e-mail at Andrewssl@mansfieldct.org.

Social Studies Homework for the Week of May 12, 2008:

Ø   This week we are finishing up our presentations of Latin America and will begin our study of Europe.  Students will locate geographical information about a European country using a variety of sources. In addition, students should continue to study their continents, oceans, and special lines of latitude as there may be a pop quiz at any time!

Reading Homework for the Week of May 13, 2008:

Ø   Students are reading a biography of their choice in class and will create a final project of their choice.  We have figured out the number of pages they need to read each day to complete their books by Thursday.  If they are not able to accomplish this, they are to complete it for homework.  As they read, they are completing a web of their person’s life.  The final project is to create a visual display of their book.  Some ideas might be a timeline, collage, poster, display board, advertisement (print or multimedia), diorama or other model, book jacket, “scrapbook” of their life.

Ø   Students will write a list of 10 “interview” questions they would like to ask the person if they had a chance to meet with them.

Ø   Students will answer the following question using TTQA: What is one problem your person has had to overcome, and how did he/she resolve the problem?  Would you have done the same thing if you were in that situation?  Why or why not?
