The thrill of beating the odds and surviving adversity is part of the attraction of action and adventure stories. The characters are often easy to identify with readers love the way they test the limits, often making mistakes, but then usually winning in the end. The obstacles that characters face can be physical or psychological and the dangers they face can come from the environment, the situation, or the other characters in the story.
