MMS Technology
Education
Firth Grade:
The students will have an opportunity to explore the materials; wood,
plastic, and metal; by doing small projects. The emphasis will be on the
material and how their characteristics effect the design process. They
will have to solve a design problem; learn the hand tools, material
processes, proper layout procedures and measurement. They will also design
a game, write the directions and create an advertisement for their game.
Sixth Grade:
The emphasis of this grade level is placed on the technology of
graphical communication of ideas from designers and engineers to the
craftsperson or builder. The students will complete 3 groups of working
drawings; 3 view, oblique, and isometric. These drawings will be done
using the computer aided drafting lab in the Tech Ed. Room. Using the
skills used for CAD, they will then design and then make a house sign.
When time permits, they can design and construct a small wooden box.
Another requirement for this level is to write a career report dealing
with a job or career that they find interesting.
Seventh Grade:
Building on the cad experience in the 6th grade, the students will design
a lamp by first drawing a scale drawing of a lamp of their design. They
will then construct the lamp. Some lamp safety and electrical safety
topics will then be discussed. They will also be accountable for the use
of the computer to search out the topic of a "technology break
through" and create a timeline note card that describes the pros and
cons of the innovation; this card will then be displayed on the timeline
in the lab. When time allows, they can explore various pre-engineering
software simulations dealing with bridge building, car design, or home
design.
Eighth Grade:
The student in the 8th grade has the opportunity to
complete varied independent projects:
- Design and construct a clock.
- Design and construct game-boards.
- Design and construct any wood joinery
pieced wooden project.
- Computer related topics…Lego-robotics,
programming a game, create WebPages.
